Stage Monitor System Fundamentals Reference
A monitor rig is really its own PA system, built to serve the people standing on stage rather than the people out front. Reference: SRH-MON-FUND-01. This isn't a step-by-step procedure — it's the background that makes the ringing-out and feedback-control guides actually make sense.
Key facts: a monitor console typically runs 8 or more separate output busses — one tailored mix per performer or group — each feeding its own EQ, amp and wedge; the monitor engineer works off a dedicated cue/solo wedge fed from the console so they can audition any individual mix; and a weak monitor rig doesn't just hurt the stage — spill, mic pickup and monitor distortion all reach the house too.
What a Monitor System Actually Is
Strip it back and a monitor rig is a second, parallel sound system — its own console, its own EQ, its own amps and speakers — running independently of the house system, with the boxes turned around to face the stage instead of the crowd. The big structural difference from a house rig is channel count on the output side: house systems are basically mono or stereo even when they've got a split PA and some fills running, but a monitor desk needs a separate output for practically every performer because every one of them wants to hear something different. The singer mostly wants backing vocals plus a touch of keys and guitar to stay on pitch and on cue. The bass player wants the kick. The drummer wants the bass. The guitarist wants both bass and drums. The keys player might just want vocal and guitar. That's why monitor consoles are built with eight-plus flexible output busses instead of the two or three a house desk gets away with — and it's also why monitor wedges themselves are voiced and dispersed differently from house boxes, usually tightened up for vocal clarity and aimed more narrowly to keep spill down.
How Signal Actually Gets From Stage to Wedge
Every mic and DI on stage runs into a splitter (often called a stage box) that creates two electrically isolated copies of the signal — one heads down the snake to FOH, the other goes straight to the monitor console. From there, each monitor output runs through its own dedicated EQ (usually a graphic, though parametrics show up too) before hitting its own power amp and wedge. The monitor engineer keeps a separate cue wedge parked right next to their own console, fed from a cue/solo bus, so they can drop in on any one performer's mix and hear exactly what that performer is hearing — which only works properly if the EQ lives in the console's insert loop rather than being patched in after the output, otherwise the cue signal skips the EQ that's actually shaping the wedge. Beyond the individual performer mixes, it's common to run a couple of side-fill wedges off to the sides of the stage from their own separate mix as well.
Why the FOH engineer shouldn't also be mixing monitors
Back before dedicated monitor desks were standard, the monitor mix got pulled from the house console out in the crowd — and it was never a good arrangement. The house engineer can't hear what the stage actually sounds like from out front, so performers were left signalling mix changes by hand across a room, which gets confusing fast mid- show. On top of that, running the house mix is already a full-time job once doors open; there's no real bandwidth left to chase individual monitor requests too. That's the whole reason monitor mixing split off into its own seat, on its own console, operated by someone who's actually standing where the performers can talk to them.
Why It's Worth Getting Right
If a performer can't hear themselves clearly, they drift out of time and out of tune — and at that point it doesn't matter how good the house mix sounds, the performance itself is compromised. That's even more true for anyone running against a click or pre-recorded tracks, since a track can't adjust to a player the way another musician can; lose your reference and you can come unstuck fast. It's also not just a stage problem: monitor spill leaks into the room and into the vocal/instrument mics regardless of how tight the dispersion is, so if the monitor rig is distorting or ringing, some of that reaches the audience whether you meant it to or not. Flatter, more accurate wedges also resist feedback better, since feedback tends to build on whatever resonant peak is loudest in the loop — so cutting corners on monitor gear isn't really saving anything, it's just moving the problem to where you can't control it as easily.
A Monitor Desk Can Do More Than Monitors
A well-specced monitor console often earns its keep twice over. Bands leaning on multiple keyboards, MIDI-slaved synths or electronic drums frequently route those sources into the monitor desk first, using it to build submixes that feed both the house console and the stage wedges at once — which means less gear to carry from gig to gig and one less thing for the house engineer to manage. Built-in or outboard talkback between the monitor position and FOH rounds it out, giving the band and crew two-way communication instead of relying on hand signals across the room.
