AC Power Safety Checklist

Reference: SRH-AC-SAFETY-01. AC power at a venue is the one part of the rig you should never assume is fine just because something lights up. A miswired outlet, a lifted ground, or a lifted neutral can all look completely normal right up until it damages gear or shocks someone. This is the walk-through I use before trusting unfamiliar power: verify the voltage, confirm the ground is real, and know how to read a bad outlet before you plug anything expensive into it.

Key facts: US/Canada gear wants a mains line between roughly 105V and 130V RMS (export gear: within about ±10% of its rated voltage). A near-zero-volt reading when ground-testing an adaptor means it's not actually grounded. A lifted neutral can put a full 220–240V across gear expecting 110–120V. Never cut the ground pin off a three-prong plug. Carry an outlet tester, a neon voltage tester, and a heavy-duty 12-gauge extension cord as standard kit — and if you're not confident testing AC yourself, stop and call a licensed electrician.

Hot, neutral, and ground run in parallel from the panel to the gear. If the neutral connection breaks, current that should return via neutral pushes onto whatever else is connected instead — checking for voltage between neutral and ground with no load is exactly how you catch that before it does damage.
